Library Board Appointment Opportunity

The Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas is accepting letters of interest and resumes for one of its appointments to the Cuyahoga County Public Library Board of Trustees.

The Cuyahoga County Public Library Board of Trustees shall have all of the powers granted to it by law and shall, in open meeting, determine and establish, in accordance with law, the basic policies of the library with respect to:


• The appropriation and budgeting of funds;
• The establishment and maintenance of libraries and library services;
• The acquisition, improvement, maintenance, insurance, use and disposition of properties;
• The hiring, compensation and responsibilities of employees;
• The selection, collection, lending and disposition of books and other library materials; and:
• The acceptance of gifts.

Cuyahoga County Public Library is a separate political subdivision governed by a seven-member Board of Trustees. Board members are appointed for seven-year terms by the Cuyahoga County government and the Court of Common Pleas. Board members serve without remuneration and are responsible for promoting the highest level of public library service to residents of the 47 communities we serve. Four members of the Library Board of Trustees are appointed by the County Executive with approval by the County Council and three members are appointed by the Court of Common Pleas. Board members are expected to maintain the highest standards of the Ohio Code of Ethics.

Agenda and Meetings

The Board holds an organizational meeting in January of each year, at a time and place agreed upon by a majority of the members. At the annual meeting, the Board shall elect its Officers, appoint its Clerk/Treasurer and fix the time and place for its regular monthly meeting, and conduct such other business of an organizational nature as may come before the board. The regular meetings shall be held each month for 11 months, the date and hour to be set by the Board at its annual meeting. Meetings are subject to Ohio’s Open Meeting Law. Agendas for meetings are published in advance of the meeting.

Committees

Board committees of one or more members each may be appointed from time to time by the President or by Board action. These committees may be temporary [Ad Hoc] committees to examine specific issues or concerns, or they may be on-going [Standing] committees for continuing purposes or projects of the Board. Current committees include Finance and Policy, Planning and External Relations. A temporary Capital Committee currently exists. The Board is responsible for the hiring, compensation and evaluation of the Executive Director.
