Judge Richard A. Markus

Judge Richard A. Markus

The Court offers its condolences to the family of Judge Richard A. Markus, who passed away last week at the age of 91.

Judge Markus served on our Bench from 1976-1980, and later as a Visiting Judge for our Court.

Judge Markus graduated from Northwestern University and then attended Harvard Law School, where he served as an editor of Harvard Law Review. He practiced law for 20 years in Cleveland, leaving his practice to become a Common Pleas Court Judge. He then left our bench to become a professor at Harvard Law School.

Shortly thereafter the Ohio governor offered him an appointment to the Ohio Court of Appeals. While at the Court of Appeal, Judge Markus taught a course at Case Western Reserve University and later adding a course at the Cleveland State University law school. After two terms, he returned to legal practice at Porter Wright, working in Cleveland and Naples, Florida. He then resigned to take a position as a visiting judge (serving in 66 Ohio counties), which he did until his 85th birthday.
